It is no mystery that I'm a huge fan of The Dark Tower series, but I have to admit, I may enjoy The Talisman/ Black House a bit more. It might be the fact that I didn't have to sit through a Western novel in order to get to the really good stuff, or it might be because I really hate when King kills my favorite characters. Either way, I have to be honest that The Dark Tower books, while magical and truly life-changing, aren't my absolute favorite of King's works.
There has been a lot of buzz about Stephen King's new novel Fairy Tale coming out early this fall. Many are comparing it to his son's Locke and Key. My interest was piqued when I saw a post likening it to The Talisman! So many fans love King for his horror books and movies, but the hardcore Constant Readers tend to be most interested in the not-so-famous works. I am one of those hardcore Constant Readers (obviously).
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, King described his creative process like this: "What could you write that would make you happy? As if my imagination had been waiting for the question to be asked, I saw a vast deserted city—deserted but alive. I saw the empty streets, the haunted buildings, a gargoyle head lying overturned in the street. I saw smashed statues (of what I didn't know, but I eventually found out). I saw a huge, sprawling palace with glass towers so high their tips pierced the clouds. Those images released the story I wanted to tell."
Fairy Tale goes on sale from Simon and Schuster on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022.
